Today we supported the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week by dressing up as a book character and conducting a parade for the whole school Kinder – Grade 6. It is always one of those fun filled days that celebrate the significant joy books bring to our lives. Books play such an important part in children’s lives! I still remember when the internet was being established (yes showing my age!) that many IT experts predicted the end of books and libraries as everything would be accessed online. Ironically, the opposite has become the case! There are more books sold now than ever and we are continually upgrading our library here at Burnie Primary School to accommodate the fabulous new children’s literature that we have purchased for students! Reading is one of the most important things students will learn, and you as parents and carers form an important part of this learning. A tip from Jackie French, Australian Children's Laureate, for parents and carers is;
Read to your kids!
This should start when they're a few days old. I'm serious...while you're cuddling them and feeding them, tuck yourself into a comfy chair with a good book, and read bits out to them. No, of course they won't understand it ... but they'll love the sound of your voice.
Read them a bedtime story every night too-and if you go out get the babysitter to do it for you! Both of these steps mean that kids associate reading with being loved and cuddled...and also gets them hooked on the fun of books.
KEEP reading to your kids!
Read stories to little kids several times a day. Even when they learn to read well, KEEP reading to them. Kids love the drama and closeness of being read to!
Make the books available! Kids can't read books that aren't there.
It's so easy for kids to turn on the TV, but books have to be hunted out...and just like our ancestors had to learn how to hunt a sabre tooth tiger, it takes time to learn book hunting, how to find the books that THEY like in shops and libraries, just by skimming the back cover and first page and a bit of the middle.
Read to your kids, take them to the library, show them how to sort through books to find the ones they like . . . then take a deep breath, because the chances are that you'll have an enthusiastic reader demanding more books NOW . . . and WHY aren't you supplying them!
To help with planning for school improvement, the DoE are about to release the ‘School Satisfaction’ Survey’s. Students, Staff and Parents will be asked to complete a survey about Burnie Primary School to help inform our planning for school improvement. We encourage all Parents and Carers to complete the survey to help inform our practice. We are always learning about new ways to enhance the quality teaching and learning here at Burnie Primary School!
With the forced changes during Term 1, the NWPSSA Athletics Carnival in Penguin was postponed. They have now released the date and they intend to run it over two days on the 21st (Grade 5 & 6) and 22nd (Grade 3 & 4) of September (with back-up days on the 28th & 29th September). We ran some trials in Term 1 before the postponement, and we will be refining these trials during PE next Tuesday to help us select our Burnie Primary School Athletics Team. As this term is not conducive to being on the oval all day for an Athletics Carnival, we intend having a fun based “Carnival” around mid-next term to get together as a school community and enjoy participating in events.
Next Thursday 1st of September, the SRC are conducting a Pyjama Day to raise awareness and resources for the homeless in our local community (Please dress your kids appropriately for this time of year. (Ooddies are allowed).
We will also be conducting our first whole school Assembly next Thursday 1st September. It will be held at 9:15 – 10:15am in the Gym. Prep, Grades 2, 4 & 6 will be presenting work and values certificates will be awarded. The Grades 1,3 & 5 will be presenting and awarded values certificates in our Week 10 Assembly on Thursday 29th September 9:15 – 10:15am. All members of our school community including extended families are invited to attend. We are looking forward to meeting together again!
Kinder enrolments are now open for children turning 5 in 2023 (born in 2018). We encourage you to enrol your child now to help us with our 2023 planning. To help with transition into Kinder, we will be conducting 3 Pre-Kinder sessions this term to start to familiarise children and families, and get to know other children who will be in our 2023 Kinder classes. These will be held on Friday mornings starting Friday 9th September in the Gym. We encourage as many prospective enrolments to attend as possible.

In Term 2 and 3, Grade 5 have been working on science projects. They experimented on various subjects. For example, plants, sports, hygiene and states of matter. Grade 5 have been working very hard for a long period of time. They displayed their findings to multiple classes throughout our school in a science expo, answering questions and sharing their results.
During this time, Grade 5 have been displaying many learning assets including collaborating and communicating by sharing their ideas. While working they have also shown self-management by doing extra at home to ensure they got it done. Thinking and researching were necessary during this project, to help them maintain a larger understanding.

We were researchers when using books and online sources to find out interesting facts about the Commonwealth Games. We researched the history of the Commonwealth Games and athletes who have competed in the games. Some students chose to present their research as an information report and other students shared their findings from a question they had researched using drawings and text.
On the Thursday 1st September, Burnie Primary SRC will be having a Pyjama Day. We ask you to bring a gold coin or a toiletry item, for example, shampoo, body wash, conditioner, deodorant, etc. Pyjama day is about supporting homeless people and helping a fundraiser called “Share The Dignity.” Share the Dignity gives women toiletries that help them with hygiene. Mrs Smith has contacted City Mission and all the gold coins will go towards more toiletries for the homeless. After Pyjama Day, all toiletries donated will be put into packs and sent off to City Mission to then be sent around Burnie to homeless people. Thank you for supporting the SRC.
On Tuesday 9th of August, most of the North-West coast competed in the 5/6 sports expo. All participants used a lot of communication and collaboration skills.
Students had the option of sports such as football, basketball, Tennis, King of the court and Netball.
All participants loved doing this sports expo and can’t wait for next years.

We all had a fantastic day at the netball centre. Every student participating displayed excellent sportsmanship and enjoyed the opportunity to play teams from other schools. It was great to see some of our students who had never played before giving their best effort and learning some new skills. Well done everyone.
Some of our Burnie Primary students from grades 4, 5, 6 recently finished off a successful season with the Burnie Dockers. On Sunday the 14th August they were crowned 2022 premiers of the under 12's NWFL with a dominant win over Ulverstone.
