Welcome back to Term 3 to all in the Burnie Primary School Community, to what promises to be another term jam packed with learning. The beginning of this term brings a chance to reflect on our Burnie Primary School Commitment :
“Working together we inspire and engage all learners to learn more every day”
This term also brings some staffing changes. Mr Stephen Dome has made the difficult decision to relinquish his AST position and have a rest from teaching to look after his health. He didn’t want a big announcement but it would be remiss of me not to thank him for his work and contribution to learning here at Burnie Primary. Miss Holly Geard has joined our school community to take PE on our normal PE days. Miss Apryl Radford will be working on the Grade 1 class on Mondays and Tuesdays this term with Miss Christina Cohen. Ann Elliott has decided to reduce her hours in the office to one day a week. We welcome Anita Groenwege to our admin team starting this term full time as our clerk. I would like to thank Ann for her contribution to BPS and look forward to continue to see her presence in the office. We welcome Miss T back this term and wish Miss Jana Kalweit all the best for her period of leave for the next two terms. Miss Meaghan Hosking will join the Grade 4 team for the rest of the year.
Monday’s student free professional learning day gave us the opportunity to work alongside Somerset, Cooee and Natone Primary Schools and Burnie High School staff for our exciting Numeracy project called ‘Burnie Counts’. Grades 3 – 6 teachers had the opportunity to work with the highly acclaimed Di Siemon on the ‘Big Ideas in Number’, while Kinder – Grade 2 teachers previewed the updated Australian Curriculum V9 which will come into effect in 2023. They also worked with the other Burnie High feeder Primary schools to work with our Department of Education Maths Senior Project Officer Toni Popowski, exploring quality numeracy tasks and the role of quality picture books in the teaching of Maths. We look forward to working more with these other schools into this year and next, especially as some covid restrictions have been eased to allow for face to face meetings across schools.

During last term the Grade 6 Students inquired about the meaning of NAIDOC Week and investigated the story of Vincent Lingiari and the Gurindji Walk Off. Students completed a set of tasks and were required to communicate their understandings to their peers. As an extension to the investigation, students researched the song From Little Things Big Things Grow which was written by Paul Kelly and tells the story of Vincent and the Walkoff. The final learning activity required the students to communicate their understandings of NAIDOC week through discussing the 2022 NAIDOC Poster and then creating a mini poster of their own. We even had a chance to work collaboratively with Mr Starick and sing From Little Things Big Things Grow.

The individualised letters were given to students on Thursday 7 July.
On Tuesday 9 August, Grades 5 and 6 students from Burnie Primary will join with students from other schools to take part in a Sports Expo. The Sports Expo is organised by the North West Primary School Sports Association (NWPSSA).
The students will participate in one of the following sports for the day:
- Soccer- McKenna Park
- Netball- Howe Street
- Basketball- Somerset Sport Centre
- Football- Burnie High School
- Tennis – Burnie Tennis Club
- King of the Court- Upper Burnie Sports Centre
Students and teachers will travel by bus to one of these venues. The bus will leave at approximately 9:15am and return by 2:30pm.
Students will need:
- School clothing – keep in mind sportswear eg shorts/trackies instead of a skirt/dress etc for practicality and warmth
- Sandshoes for Basketball, Netball, King of the Court and Tennis
- Shin pads- for soccer
- Football boots for soccer and football
- Jacket/coat
- Plenty of water to drink and a packed recess and lunch – there will be no canteen available
Parents are invited to come along and see their child/ren take part.
Wednesday 3rd August is our first subway ordering day. You will need to register to order on the new website below before ordering, ordering closes at 11:30pm for the follow day.
Welcome back to school for the start of Term 3!
The health and safety of students and staff has, and always will be, our top priority. Our Term 3 approach to manage COVID-19 is outlined in our COVID-safe schools operational plan. The Plan builds on everything we’ve learnt since the start of the pandemic.
The Department of Education (DoE) has worked closely with Public Health to ensure schools continue to be safe places for learners. Many COVID-safe measures that you are familiar with continue to be in place to limit the impact of COVID-19 in our schools.
With increased COVID-19 cases in our community leading into Term 3, our staff and visitors are strongly recommended to wear face masks when indoors, or if they are unable to physically distance. Wearing a face mask is not a requirement for students, however it is strongly recommended by Public Health indoors as well as when they cannot physically distance. Students will be supported to wear masks by their school when they choose to.
Face masks and rapid antigen tests continue to be readily available for students and staff at all Tasmanian Government schools.
It is common to see increased illness at this time of year, so it remains important that we all continue to practise our COVID safe behaviours, stay at home if unwell and get tested.
As always, when your child is well, the best place for them to be is at school learning with their friends and teachers.
We will need to continue to be flexible as some elements of our plan may change during the Term. We will continually monitor the situation, make changes as necessary and keep school communities informed.
Our Launching into Learning Programs held its first Books in Homes Ceremony for 2022. We enjoyed singing, story time with Mr Starick in the library, and then children received their books. It was wonderful to see the excitement.
We are very fortunate to be part of a collective sponsored by Burnie Works, where each child received a bag of popular children’s books to enjoy at home to support their reading journey. Burnie Primary School would like to thank all those at Burnie Works for providing this wonderful opportunity for our LiL Students. We look forward to our next Books in Homes celebration in Term 4.
