Students and our whole Burnie Primary School community never cease to amaze me when it comes time to think of others! One of our General Capabilities in the Australian Curriculum is ‘Personal and Social’ capabilities. The curriculum describes these capabilities as “involving students in a range of practices including recognising and regulating emotions, developing empathy for others and understanding relationships, establishing and building positive relationships, making responsible decisions, working effectively in teams, handling challenging situations constructively and developing leadership skills.” The efforts of our Student Representative Council in organising the recent collaboration with St. Vincent de Paul (Vinnies) to raise awareness, and the collection of food and care packs for the homeless in and around Burnie, and then on Monday night, to help disseminate these packs was a huge evidence of understanding from these young leaders. Check out the photos in today’s newsletter to get an idea of how much was donated, and then bagged up and delivered to the Vinnies Food Van for distribution to those in need. We could have just had the traditional gold coin donation, but the SRC wanted the experience to be more practical than that, and so the donation of non-perishable food, toiletries, and even sleeping bags provided them with the opportunity to take their leadership that extra step forward, and brought our school community together behind a worthy cause.I am excited to be learning alongside the Grade 4s next Wednesday, in one of the oldest ‘classrooms’ in the world! We will be travelling to the Arthur River, ‘Kings Run’ and preminghana (Mount Cameron West) to experience, learn and celebrate one of the oldest living cultures in the world in our Tasmanian Aboriginal culture. We will be joined by Aboriginal Rangers who will help us enrich this experience! This valuable educational experience that is somewhat unique to Burnie Primary School, especially for students in Grade 4. We will continue this learning as a follow up to our recent excursion to pinmatik (Rocky Cape) two weeks ago with National Parks Discovery Ranger Jye Croswell. This on country experience is a real celebration and a high-quality learning experience for all, and again goes to demonstrate the rich learning we are able to provide to the students of Burnie Primary School. If you would like an idea of the experience, check out the short documentary produced by ABC Northern Tasmania journalist Rick Eaves, about the experience we provide for our Grade 4 students last year, learning from the ‘oldest classroom in the world’. It has been recognised by ABC National and has been shown Australia wide and through Facebook and ABC news channels! https://www.facebook.com/abc/videos/455253798535200/UzpfSTEwMDAwMDUwMTk1NjQxMzozMDA5MTg4NDkyNDQxMTg2/?notif_id=1568513898000390¬if_t=feedback_reaction_generic_tagged

SRC Vinnies Homeless Fundraiser Day
Dear Burnie Primary School Community,
Thank you for all the extremely generous donations. The SRC with Mr Dome have had a very busy day collecting the donations and making up packs for the homeless.
With your help we have created a significant number of packs which included; numerous cans of food, soups, noodles, breakfast cereals, pasta, small snacks, rice and custard.
Each pack also contained a sanitary pack for both males and females filled with the following items; toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, soap, shampoo, sanitary pads, tissues, brushes, combs, beauty items and lotions.
There was also a fantastic number of clothes, blankets and sleeping bags donated.
These packs will assist the homeless of the Burnie/North West Community by giving them food to eat, keeping them warm and clean which will generate a feeling of pride in themselves.
The SRC with Mr Dome will be assisting the Vinnies food van on Monday evening by handing out these packs to the homeless.
With great thanks and appreciation from Burnie Primary School Student Representative Council of 2020; Lily, Mia, Xander, Jamieson, Rhani, Kadeisha, William, Maya, Bridie, Darriq, Sharlotte and Rhiannon

Today our BPS Cross Country squad headed to Ulverstone to compete in the NWPSSA Cross Country Carnival, everyone put in their best effort and we had some amazing results.

This term in HASS Grade 6 has been learning about the Stolen Generation. We have written diary entries as though we were a part of the Stolen Generation. We have also been learning about perspective and audience in English. Here are some of our diary entries:

Grade 6 has also been learning to write different text types (poetry - sonnet and diamante, snapshot writing and newspaper reports). Here is some of our work:

Last Friday, 4 September during lunchtime we had a Staff V Students Netball game. The students were fierce competitors but the staff came away with the win. Thank you to all staff and students who participated, everyone displayed excellent sportsmanship.

Students can bring along their deposit book to their class each Tuesday where our volunteer co-ordinator, Hallee-Ce will complete the necessary process.

How School Banking works:
It's easy as 1,2,3:
- Bring your deposit to school in your Dollarmites deposit wallet on your weekly ‘School Banking Day’ to collect a silver Dollarmites token
- Once you collect 10 tokens (if receiving physical tokens, maximum one token per week) you can choose a reward by placing the redemption slip or card and 10 tokens in your Dollarmites deposit wallet and bringing it in on School Banking Day
- Kids can track their savings progress in the CommBank Youth app
